Why establish
a Danish Agricultural Network in Engineering and Technology?

Preface by Helge Sander, Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation. From Christensen, S. & Jensen, B.-E., 2004. DaNet - Danish Agricultural Network in Engineering and Technology. Folder, 18 pp.

The agricultural sector faces important challenges in the coming years. We want to improve the health and well being of each individual by improving the food quality and provide safer food production systems. We give high priority to consumer demands, and on a European scale we focus on the ‘fork-to-farm’ perspective. Seen from a global perspective we face situations with famine, malnutrition and metabolic diseases.

The Danish Government is determined to turn Denmark into one of the world’s leading high-technology countries. The aim is to improve the quality and efficiency of the public science systems, and to make the sector more eager to face the challenges in the global knowledge society.

I believe that we are more than ready to face the challenges. The agricultural sector in Denmark is home to internationally recognized scientific communities and to cutting-edge technologies. We have a long history for collaboration and coordination in this sector. This goes for the entire food chain from education, basic and applied research, innovation, new start-up companies and major companies.

We have made major investments in this sector and have come a long way. We know that Denmark has unexploited potential for interaction between industry and public research.

Therefore DaNet is vital if we want to reap the benefits of our investments in the agricultural sector.

Through this network all relevant stakeholders in the science and business communities have been brought together to focus on how knowledge from the agricultural sector will be the starting point for finding concrete solutions to the increasing number of global challenges we are faced with.

Networking and international collaboration are two important pillars for Denmark to achieve our goal of becoming one of the worlds leading high-technology countries. We have set ourselves an ambitious target – and DaNet is an important player to achieve this.
